Diet Plan to Cut Health Care Costs

Health Care Rally

The big debate in cutting health care costs is moving away from prevention and toward a healthier diet plan. Prevention has been something millions of Americans have been doing throughout the years, by taking blood pressure and cholesterol managing drugs. However, researchers are now saying the American people should switch gears and focus on exercising and eating right not only to lead healthier lives but to fatten your wallet.

The Omaha World Herald reported that an investment of $10 per person per year in a proven non-medical prevention program could save the country more than $16 billion in annual health care costs within five years. Why would we rather turn to prescription drugs to control a potential health risk than go to the gym or take a brisk walk outside? In 2006, prescription drug spending reached $217 billion which was more than five times the amount it hit in 1990. Doctor’s are so quick to reach for the prescription pad than to advise their patients to work towards a healthier diet plan which should include: a balanced diet, exercising, and consuming the correct amount of vitamins.

Ways to save on health care costs:

  • Diet plans that focus on reaching a healthy body weight.
  • Prevention of bad habits such as smoking and other tobacco use.
  • Regular scheduled physicals, and screenings for mammograms and colonoscopies.
  • Take advantage of prescription drug mail-in orders and specials.
  • Review medical bills carefully and don’t be afraid to discuss different options with your doctor.

Tools to a healthier lifestyle

Would you rather spend $70.00 a month on high blood pressure medication a month or save that money and go on a trip or a shopping spree?! I know what I would rather do, do you?

Ciao!
