Fruit for Thought?
Fruit is always a yummy treat and with the warmer months in sight, fruits are getting so much sweeter and available in the stores and farmers markets. Even though fruit is naturally a sweet treat it still has sugar content. While you are trying to lose weight, it is important that you keep But some fruits have less sugar than others and are still just as delicious!
Some low sugar varieties are:
Watermelon
Casaba-melon
Papaya
Berries: blackberry, raspberry, blueberry, and strawberries are all a great treat.
Tomato: That’s right tomatoes are a fruit too, and so yummy when paired with other fruits in delicious salad.
Stone fruits: Are just coming in season and most are under 7 grams of sugar per fruit, and less than 40 calories
Cherries: Great antioxidant
Citrus fruits: grapefruit, orange, tangerine, mandarins
Cranberries
Check out these yummy, yet vitamin filled recipes using fresh fruits that will fill you up and never let you down!
Watermelon Tomato Salad:
1 Cup cubed watermelon
3 Tomatoes cubed (whatever type looks best in the store.) 1 T chopped cilantro
2 T low fat feta cheese 1 T orange juice
1 T lemon juice 1 t honey
1/8 cup olive oil 1 shallot minced
Drop of honey to taste S/P to taste
Place watermelon, tomatoes, and feta in a large bowl. Mix remaining ingredients together to make dressing, pour over the melon and tomato toss to dress salad. Serve over a handful of your favorite lettuce or enjoy alone!
Refreshing Fruit Salad:
1 cup cherries pitted and halved 1 papaya cubed
6 apricots cubed 1 c cubed watermelon
1 cup of your favorite berries Juice of 1 lime
1 T honey ½ cup chopped mint leaves
Toss everything in a bowl, serve as a delicious fruit salad or add a little yogurt and blend into a refreshing smoothie.
SENSAble Skewers:
Skewer your favorite fruits and dress with orange juice. They are a great snack on the go and look fancy at any party!
Grilled Peaches:
2 peaches halved pit removed Olive oil
Pinch of salt
Fat free Greek vanilla yogurt
Toasted slivered almonds
Rub peaches with oil then sprinkle with salt and place on a hot grill. Grill about 3 minutes per side just enough to see grill marks. Remove peach from the grill, cool for 2 minutes then top with a scoop of yogurt and a sprinkle with the toasted almonds.
Pretty Girl Smoothie:
4 Kale leaves washed and trimmed 1 peach halved
Handful strawberries ½ cup fresh orange juice
¼ cup fresh grapefruit juice ½ cup papaya
Use blender to blend your smoothie, if you find it’s too tart for you add 1 T honey. This smoothie is not only tasty, but also a great snack to hold you over in between meals. Also most of these fruits have great nutritional value as well as kale, drinking 1 or more of these smoothies a week will most likely improve your skins glow and make you feel re-energized!
So take a break this weekend go to the store or local farmers market and grab a few of your favorite fruits. I bet you’ll have forgotten how good they are…
