Everybody loves a hearty recipe with a tad more of this or a little extra of that. But there are ways to cut out that that extra calories and make those favorite foods of yours that you love and enjoy healthier. Here are some healthy eating tips for making meals at home, just by modifying and making small changes to your meals, you can cut out extra fat and add more nutrients.

Try and choose whole grains whenever possible. Think of multi-grain or whole grain instead of wheat or white bread for your sandwiches. Whole wheat pasta, whole grains are great for you because they are a great source of fiber and have a ton of vitamins rather than processed grains.

Add more vegetables than meat in your meals. In your pasta add in some zucchini or squash into the sauce. Steam broccoli and carrots twice the amount of the chicken you’re grilling. Having too many vegetables is never a bad thing.

Substitute or delete ingredients all together. Trade butter for olive oil, whole milk for fat free,  bacon for smoked turkey, or brown rice for white rice. Some Ingredients like, mayonnaise, pickles, and parmesan cheese can be eliminated all together.

Switch out chicken or beef for fish. Fish is lower in saturated fat than their chicken or beef counterparts.  Eating fish increases good cholesterol and healthy fats like omega 3 fatty acids. Asparagus and brown rice pair well with salmon.

Go half-yolk half white on your eggs. If you eat two eggs remove one egg yolk. The yolk of the egg contains the fat and cholesterol. Eggs are a great source of protein and you can find that in the white. Try this for your omelets or scrambled.

It’s easier to follow healthy eating tips when you prepare meals at home rather than takeout. However, sometimes we can have a heavy hand with the ingredients we know we shouldn’t. You can find healthy food alternatives to your favorite recipes so you can still enjoy your favorite foods without skimping on taste.

Yours Truly,

Cassandra
