Healthy Eating Tips for the Winter Months: Healthy Spaghetti
Winter is officially here and tis the season of comfort foods and we are all in need of a healthy eating tip for the winter months. They are here to keep us warm both physically and mentally, but they all pack hidden calories, so beware of what you consume during this holiday season and make sure that you keep your SENSA shaker nearby.
I have developed a healthy alternative to one of America’s favorite comfort foods, Spaghetti Bolognese. This recipe rivals the Spaghetti that you may find at your favorite Italian restaurant or office cafeteria because it is made with nutritional ingredients including whole wheat noodles, fresh mushrooms and sweet and savory pasta sauce. All of these ingredients work together to satisfy your mind, body and soul.
Yeild: 6-12 servings
Ingredients:
1 pound of lean ground beef(10%-15% fat)
1 package of whole wheat Spaghetti
1 Shallot, minced
3-4 cloves of garlic, minced
6-8 button mushrooms, sliced
1 (32oz) Jar of store bought Marinara Sauce(Prego or Trader Joes/Whole Foods 365)
Kosher Salt & Black Pepper
4 Tablespoons of Olive Oil(Extra Virgin is prefered)
Directions:
1. Bring a pot of salted water to a boil and prepare Bolognese sauce(meat pasta sauce)
2. Add oil to a saucepan and saute minced shallot, garlic and add mushrooms
3. Cook until mushrooms begin to shrink and add meat and cook until lightly browned
4. Add in Marinara sauce and bring to a simmer.
5. Once sauce is nicely combined add pasta to boiling water and cook 10-12 minutes.
6. Strain pasta and combine sauce with spaghetti and toss together
7. Put a generous heap of pasta on a plate and top with shaved parmesan cheese and serve with a side salad of mixed greens and a slice of garlic bread.
